     You're missing enclosing the string between quotes (singles or doubles). You can check the query you're executing by printing it before the mycursor.execute statement, but basically you're sending MySQL something like SELECT count(*) FROM tbl_user WHERE username = foobar.

     Try fixing it with SELECT count(*) FROM tbl_user WHERE username = '%s'.

     On a side note, your approach is vulnerable to SQL Injection. You should check the documentation of the tool you're using to connect to the DBMS for "prepared statements".

     SELECT basketID from <tablename> WHERE ballcolor = "RED";-

     The above query gives you the basketIDs that have a red ball in it.

     With this query, you can find all the ballIDs in the baskets that have a red ball using a subquery.

     SELECT ballID from <tablename> WHERE basketID IN (SELECT basketID from <tablename> WHERE ballcolor = "RED");

     Turns out the root cause was invalid values in the columns I was using for the arithmetic in my where clause, and the solution was to use a case expression inside a subquery to first sanitize the values I want to perform the arithmetic on, then filter on them in the outer query. Example:

     select t1.value1, count(*) as total_valuesfrom ( select t1.ID as innerID, (case when t1.SET_START_TIME < 10000 and t1.SET_START_TIME > 0 then t1.SET_START_TIME else 0 end) as set_start, (case when t1.SET_END_TIME < 10000 and t1.SET_END_TIME > 0 then t1.SET_END_TIME else 0 end) as set_end from TABLE1 t1 ) innerTable join TABLE2 t2 on innerID = t2.IDwhere (set_end - set_start) > 2 and t2.CREATED_AT > '2017-06-11T00:00:00'group by t1.value1;

     rawtohex() works, but stringencode() is probably simpler, as it returns the Java encoded string:

     select rawtohex('test' || char(13) || char(444));> 0074006500730074000d01bc-select stringencode('test' || char(13) || char(444));> test\r\u01bc
