    • Basic lotion recipe. This is Blankenship's go-to number, a light, basic hydrator that works its magic year-round. Here's what you'll need: Ingredients: ½ cup jojoba oil (or other carrier oil of choice)
    • Thick, whipped lotion. "To make a whip-thick version, you can omit the liquid and use a carrier oil, butter, and wax," says Blankenship. Here's a recipe that piles on the butter
    • Lightweight, nongreasy lotion. Sometimes you want a thin moisturizer that nourishes without a slippery seal-like sheen. Totally fair! All you have to do is take out the butter and replace it with aloe.
    • Fragrance-free baby lotion. For those with sensitive skin, baby lotion is a must—most are hypoallergenic, fragrance-free hydrators that soothe angry skin with ease.
    • Know this before you begin. Before you begin gathering ingredients and cooking up your DIY lotion, focus on the following: Think about the recipe: what do you want your cream to do?
    • Equipment you need. Here’s what I use every time I make a facial cream or a body lotion: 2 heat-resistant glass beakers. A 0.01g scale. A silicone spatula. Immersion blender.
    • A word about a scale and why it matters. The scale is more important than you may think. You need to know the exact amount of ingredients you’re using or the final products can result in a mess.
    • Gather your ingredients. Before you begin whipping anything up, think about your lotion-to-be: what’s its purpose? What do you want it to target? Do you want to make a light facial moisturizer?

Making homemade body lotion is a fun project that you can complete in less than an hour! The ingredients are easy to get your hands on and all you need is a blender to combine them. This recipe is gentle and fragrance-free, making it safe to use on sensitive skin, but you can easily incorporate a subtle scent using your favorite essential oils. If ...

1 cup (230 grams) of unrefined, 100% organic shea butter

1 cup (240 ml) of coconut oil

2 tablespoons (30 ml) of vegetable glycerin

2 tablespoons (30 ml) of vitamin E oil

2 ounces (60 ml) of extra virgin olive oil

1 teaspoon (3 ml) of essential oil (optional)

Scoop 1 cup (230 grams) of shea butter into a large bowl.

Use a measuring cup to portion out 1 cup (230 grams) of unrefined, 100% organic shea butter. Scrape the shea butter out of the measuring cup into a bowl with your fingers or a spoon.

Add 1 cup (240 ml) of coconut oil to the bowl.

Measure out the coconut oil and dump it into the bowl with the shea butter. It's totally fine to use the same measuring cup that you used for the shea butter without rinsing it out first.

Pour in the vegetable glycerin and vitamin E oil.

Measure out 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of vegetable glycerin and dump it into the bowl with the shea butter and coconut oil. Then, do the same with 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of vitamin E oil.

Add 1 teaspoon (3 ml) of essential oil to the mixture, if desired.

If you want to jazz up your lotion with a subtle scent, add your favorite essential oil to the mixture while it’s still in the blender. You can use a single essential oil or a combination of several—it's completely customizable. If you aren’t sure what scents you like, you might try:

Lavender oil for a relaxing, slightly herbal scent

Rose oil for a classic floral fragrance

Citrus oils like sweet orange and grapefruit for a bright, energetic scent

Patchouli or cedarwood oil for a deep, woody scent
