West Highland White Terriers have a somewhat tragic origin. Scottish landowner Colonel E.D. Malcolm accidentally shot his Cairn Terrier while out hunting foxes in the late 1800s because he mistook it for a rabbit. From then on, he swore to only breed and use highly visible white Terriers while hunting so that type of tragic mistake could never be repeated. In just a few decades, this new breed of dog, called the West Highland White Terrier, was appearing at dog shows.
