Balantidium coli cysts in wet mounts. Both Balantidium coli trophozoites and cysts may be shed in stools. Both stages may occur in diarrheal stools, and usually only cysts are observed formed stools.
Balantidium coli has two developmental stages, a trophozoite stage and a cyst stage. In trophozoites, the two nuclei are visible. The macronucleus is long and sausage-shaped, and the spherical micronucleus is nested next to it, often hidden by the macronucleus.
Balantidium cysts are larger (40 to 60 μm) than ameba cysts and are binucleate (macro- and micronuclei), and at times the trophic organism can be seen spinning within the cyst wall due to ciliary activity. The two organisms are found in the trophic state in diarrheic stools.
