      • David Ayer’s The Tax Collector is worth a look for the ways it pulls together a small scale production with outsize ambitions. Bolstered by a diverse and interesting cast of a kind we don’t see nearly enough, it paints a vivid portrait of the seedier side of the Los Angeles underworld.

The Tax Collector opens in select theaters, On Demand and Digital on August 7.

After the high-profile franchise demands of Netflix’s Bright three years ago and Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad in 2016 (which achieved box office success even as it was largely dismissed by the critical consensus), it’s understandable that writer-director David Ayer has gone smaller scale for his newest project, the indie crime thriller The Tax Collector. And while it benefits from Ayer’s considerable strengths as a filmmaker and some interesting casting choices, it also suffers from a meandering story that feels too padded even for its 95-minute runtime and a worldview that’s so bleak it threatens to collapse in on itself like a black hole.

Mind you, Ayer (who also wrote Training Day and co-wrote the first Fast and the Furious) has always excelled at placing characters up against the grimy nastiness of the world and letting the drama unfold accordingly. With Fury and Sabotage, he leveraged the iconography of stars Brad Pitt and Arnold Schwarzenegger, respectively, in just this fashion, and the results were fascinating even if flawed. It’s also what made Suicide Squad far more interesting than it’s given credit for, with the “Ayer” of it all sidetracked by the studio’s need for a candy-colored comic book product, but the resultant mix no less worth watching.
