The Nine Network is a major Australian commercial free-to-air television network that is a division of Nine Entertainment Co., with headquarters in Willoughby, a suburb located on the North Shore of Sydney. The Nine Network is one of three main free-to-air commercial networks in Australia.

The logo which consists of a numeral 9 beside nine dots arranged in a 3x3 grid is one of the most iconic logos in Australia between 1969 and 2006, and again since 2008.

    1959–1963

In 1959, GTV-9 Melbourne and TCN-9 Sydney came together to form The National Television Network alongside newly-opened stations QTQ-9 Brisbane and NWS-9 Adelaide. Before this TCN-9 was affiliated with HSV-7 Melbourne while GTV-9's sister affiliate was ATN-7 Sydney.

    1967–1968

The National Television Network was renamed "The National Nine Network" around 1967. STW-9 Perth was not included in the affiliation, remaining independent until 1978.

    1969–2006

Typography:  None Launched:  9 July 1969 Brian Sadgrove designed the National Nine Network's iconic, long-running logo that debuted on 9 July 1969 for black and white broadcasts (in its first few years), as this logo was in white. This logo consists of a number 9 beside the nine dots arranged in a 3x3 grid. When the network began colour transmissions between 1974 and 1975, the text "LIVING COLOR" (the American spelling of "colour") was placed underneath. Two different variants were used, one of which separated the dots and the number 9 slightly as seen in the logo above. Perth station STW-9 would carry this logo in 1978. In 1987, the network dropped the word "National" and became the Nine Network Australia while keeping this logo. Although this logo was retired at the end of 2000, it continued to be used on some of their home media releases from Roadshow until 2006, when the logo underwent a redesign without the dots.

    2001–2006

Typography:  None Launched:  1 January 2001 In 2000, German design agency Velvet mediendesign tweaked the logo to make the dots a bit smaller and to have a modified number 9, including a set of new on-air graphics. The logo made its first on-air appearance on 1 January 2001 to coincide with the introduction of digital TV in Australia.

    2006–2008

Typography:  None Launched:  30 January 2006 On 30 January 2006, the Nine Network (as well as its affiliates) underwent a rebrand in honour of the network's 50th anniversary. The dots were removed for the second time since 1988. This logo consists of a blue square with a redesigned number 9 (with a few rounded corners being removed) placed inside it. The graphics package used during that time was designed by design agency Bruce Dunlop Associates (now known as BDA Creative). On 15 January 2007 the logo became 2D. Just 5 months later, the dots were relaunched to become visible on every second surface of the box.

    2008–present

Typography:  None Launched:  14 January 2008 On 14 January 2008 as part of a major relaunch, the Nine Network added the dots back into the logo (after a 2-year absence) and they are now a bit larger. The blue square was removed from the number 9. The slogan used with this logo was "we♥TV", which was also used earlier in December 2007 with the previous logo. Unfortunately, due to affiliation disagreements, the Perth and Adelaide stations under WIN ownership did not have the dots added back into the logo until March 2010. On 1 February 2009, the dots were once again 2D as part of a short-lived rebrand, which lasted until 26 September.
