Braille enables people with blindness and visual impairments to read through touch. Though Louis Braille created the tactile reading and writing system we use today, he drew inspiration from a French army captain named Charles Barbier who developed a similar code.
The first thing to know is that braille is a code and not a language itself. There are different “grades” and versions of braille. The most basic is “grade one braille” in which every letter is transcribed. For every letter in the English alphabet, there is a braille character.
Braille is read by people who are blind, deafblind or who have low vision, and by both those born with a visual impairment and those who experience sight loss later in life. Braille may also be used by print impaired people, who although may be fully sighted, due to a physical disability are unable to read print.
