Overview
Centaurworld was produced by Megan Nicole Dong's studio Sketchshark Productions and distributed by Netflix. The show's two contrasting art styles were designed by the production team and then animated by two different studios: Red Dog Culture House who animated the human world that Horse and Rider are from, and Mercury Filmworkswho animated all the scenes that take place in Centaurworld. The purpose of using two separate animation studios was to establish the different looks of the two worlds...
Music
The series focuses heavily on music and was strongly inspired by music of various genres as well as musical theater, particular Broadway productions such as Wicked and Waitress. It was also influenced by movies such as The Wizard of Oz. According to Dong, allowing the songs in the series to tell the story was a huge priority. Centaurworld's musical theater influences also include stage lighting styles, which were referenced by art director Kimberly Knoll for the series' numerous musical scenes.
Design
Veteran character animator James Baxter joined the studio early into production and taught a masterclass to the other artists on drawing and animating horses. According to the series' lead character designer Evan Palmer, there are a few loose rules in place when designing centaurs: 1. Centaurs do not have noses 2. Centaurs do not have eyebrows 3. If the animal half of a centaur typically has no ears (such as birdtaurs), then they will have human ears
