Durango, city, capital of Durango estado (state), north-central Mexico. It lies in the south-central part of the state in a fertile valley of the Sierra Madre Occidental, about 6,200 feet (1,900 metres) above sea level. Although first settled in 1556, Durango was not officially founded until 1563.

For its history, Durango has been both a frontier and central Mexican entity, especially the city. During the colonial period, Durango eventually became one of the main cities of New Spain in part because it was both part of the center and periphery of the territory.
First explored by Europeans in 1562–63, Durango shared the colonial history of Chihuahua as a major part of the province of Nueva Vizcaya; the two became sovereign and separate states in 1823. Native American peoples rebelled often in their frontier areas during the 19th century.

Durango was founded on July 8, 1563, by the Spanish explorer Francisco de Ibarra. During the Spanish colonial era the city was the capital of the Nueva Vizcaya province of New Spain, which consisted mostly of what became the Mexican states of Durango and Chihuahua.
Durango History. Durango's earliest residents were the Ancestral Puebloans, over 2,500 years ago. These ancient people enjoyed rich, fertile soil and abundant wildlife resources before moving to the mesas in the south and west of Durango, an area now encompassed by the Mesa Verde National Park.
