In 1728, English colonist William Byrd headed an expedition sent to determine the true boundary between Virginia and North Carolina. Late that summer, the party camped upstream from what is now Danville.

Chartered in 1793, it became an inspection warehouse and river transport point for tobacco. Today it is an independent city but it began in the late eighteenth century as a tiny Pittsylvania County community by the ford of the Dan where the road from western North Carolina to Tidewater Virginia crossed the river. Danville was chartered in 1793 and became an official tobacco inspection station that year.

By 1792, these meetings had become an annual custom. When one of the men, William Wynn, decided to settle there permanently, the village of Wynn’s Falls was formed.
