Aug 31, 2018 · Oklahoma was the 46th state to enter the Union on November 16, 1907. Prior to statehood, however, Oklahoma was on the verge of becoming two separate states: the state of Oklahoma and the state of Sequoya.
STATEHOOD MOVEMENT. The greatest impetus for Oklahoma statehood began after the Land Run of 1889. Approximately fifty thousand non-Indian settlers made the run on April 22, 1889, into the Unassigned Lands (Oklahoma District). They began immediately to clamor for statehood in order to gain representation in Congress.
Oklahoma was part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 that greatly expanded the United States area (Figure 1). The region was settled by various Native American populations, including the Caddoans, Siouans, and Athapascans (mainly Plains Apache). The area was also raided and used as a hunting ground by Kiowa, Comanche, and Arapaho populations.
