- “Living in the U.S.A.” (1968) I had come out of a radical environment at the University of Wisconsin in the early ‘60s. I had been a Freedom Rider in the Civil Rights campaign and then I got involved in the Vietnam War demonstrations and debates.
- “Space Cowboy” (1969) “Space Cowboy” is a funny song because I was staying at the Chateau Marmont when I was working on it and I was stuck for lyrics. Ben Sidran was in the studio and he and I put the words together in about 15 minutes.
- “The Joker” (1973) I was writing “The Joker” and I had three pieces of music. I was working on about 21 songs at the same time—the lyrics to “Take the Money and Run,” the lyrics to “Rock ‘n Me” and the lyrics to “The Joker” could all be interchanged with the music for the different tracks.
- “Take the Money and Run” (1976) I usually will play my guitar or my piano and I’ll get an idea that I like or I’ll find something that’s interesting. Once I find that I’ll find a melody for it.

While the single-CD version collects all the hits plus a previously unreleased solo demo of Seasons (originally on 1969’s Brave New World album), it’s on the 40-track, two-CD (and quadruple-vinyl) set where things get really interesting.
