Chapter 17: Frank and Joe Hardy are found by a hobo who intends to steal the treasure and locks them inside until he returns. Chapter 18: Using their brains, the Hardy boys escape by breaking a hole in the side of the dry wood wall and reaching through to unlock the tank.
Set in the fictional town of Bayport, the story begins when the Hardy boys' father, Fenton Hardy, a renowned detective, is hired to investigate a series of jewelry thefts. As Fenton becomes engrossed in the case, Frank and Joe feel compelled to help him solve it.
Mr. Hardy goes to New York in the morning to follow up on clues. Frank and Joe stay in Bayport. After several days in New York, Mr. Hardy finds a clue that connects the stolen wig, car theft and attempted steamboat ticket office robbery to a well-known criminal named John “Red” Jackley.
Now all the Hardys were captured but Mr. Hardy wiggled out of the ropes he was in and freed Frank and Joe. The Hardys ran out of the cave and hid up by the house. The smugglers went on a frantic search to find them before they escaped.
