Jeremiah Sullivan Sr. had a large, graceful brick house built for his family ca. 1820 at Poplar and 2nd Streets in Madison. It is designed in classic Federal style reminiscent of the homes he would have seen in his native Virginia.
Jeremiah had emigrated from Ireland to the USA in the mid 1800’s and had settled in Indiana before enlisting in the Union Army at the start of the U.S. Civil War. Jeremiah had a very eventful war career and fought in many significant Battles, including the Battle of Stones River, Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
From Virginia in 1816, Jeremiah Sullivan immigrated to Madison, Indiana in order to practice law. In 1818, he built a Federal style home for his family, which likewise served as his headquarters for future political appointments.
After the war, Sullivan lived in Oakland, Maryland and California, working clerical jobs. He died on October 21, 1890 and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California. Jeremiah C. Sullivan was born October 1, 1830, in Madison, Indiana.
