Guan Yu ( [kwán ỳ] ⓘ; d.January or February 220 [a] ), courtesy name Yunchang, was a Chinese military general serving under the warlord Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. Along with Zhang Fei, he shared a brotherly relationship with Liu Bei and accompanied him on most of his early exploits.
Guan Yu (160–220), a famous general at the end of the Han Dynasty era (206 BC – 220 AD), was one of the best known historical figures in ancient Chinese history. Guan Yu was highly skilled in military affairs and his loyalty has been highly praised for generations.

Emperor Huizong of Song, a bumbling ruler but a devoted Taoist, was the first ruler to make Guan Yu a “deity” in the official Taoist canon. The founder of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) later gave him the higher title of “ (heavenly) emperor.”
Guan Yu appears as Guan Gong or Lord Guan in most novel translations, many historic texts, and modern conversation outside the Three Kingdoms community, and on most merchandise. In religion he is called Saintly Emperor Guan (關聖帝君) or in Buddhism, Sangharama Bodhisattva (伽藍菩薩) ( more ).
