Nimona in her typical human form has short pink hair with long side bangs, pink eyes, and pale skin. She has multiple silver earrings in both ears, with a star-shaped one in her left ear, and studs. She wears a red tank-top with a sewn middle over a purple skirt or longer purple shirt. Underneath this she seems to wear a long scale mail shirt and/or scale mail shorts. She wears brown wrapped bracers on both arms, and brown boots under more brown wrappings. She wears two brown belts. She wears a brown collar with silver circles on it, which she loses after shapeshifting to the shadow dragon.

When she shapeshifts, her animal forms and shapeshifted limbs are typically bright pink. Even her human forms tend to have some pink element (e.g., her Ballister form has a lock of pink hair, her typical child form has a red/pink color scheme). Her eyes sometimes glow pale pink or white when she's feeling strong emotion. She typically has fangs. Her shark form is unique in that it has legs.

Nimona is seemingly over 1,000 years old, but typically appears in a humanoid form that looks quite young for a human. In the screenplay script, she is initially described as a "15-year-old punk girl" (which also goes against her statement that she's not a "girl" later in the movie).

In her demon baby form, she is a boy and very small, with pale skin, short, dark brown hair, and dark circles under her dark brown eyes. She wears a long gray peasant's dress over brown pants, with a brown belt, and gray shoes.

In her child form, Nimona has long red hair, pale skin, and she has freckles on her face, particularly under her eyes and over the bridge of her nose. She wears a light red dress that slopes off of one shoulder and a pale pink apron around her waist, as well as small brown boots.

In her black shadow dragon form, she is a large amorphous mass of shadows, sometimes coalescing into something like a dragon with many bright white eyes, and a maw that can open impossibly wide. Her heart glows white.

Nimona is playful, violent, happy to commit crimes, and willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish her goals, such as physical assault, kidnap, and murder. She likes messing with people. She can also be inconsiderate of others, particularly when they're stressed. She's a bit of a loner due to being ostracized by everyone she meets, and vilified by the kingdom as a monster.

Nimona is also deeply vulnerable, and sometimes talks with Ballister about how hard it is to be labeled as a monster by society, and to be so widely hated. She deals with intense flashbacks at times from being attacked by humans. She has deep fears of being rejected, particularly in physically violent ways. She deals with heavy suicidal ideation due to loneliness and ostracization.

1,000 years before the story present, Nimona lives largely in the wild as a shapeshifter, and struggles to find acceptance among animals. One day Nimona runs across young Gloreth. Nimona shapeshifts into a human girl. Gloreth and Nimona play together and become close friends, and even closer when Gloreth accepts Nimona's shapeshifting. Eventually, adults catch them together, with Nimona shapeshifted into a pink bear. The adults pull Gloreth away, and when Nimona shapeshifts into a human again, the adults grow more aggressive and attack her. A deflected human attack sets the village on fire. When Gloreth is left behind as the adults flee, she continues to witness an enraged Nimona. Eventually, Gloreth picks up a wooden sword, raises it against Nimona, and says, "Go back to the shadows from whence you came."

Gloreth is later revered for defeating a monster often depicted as a dragon (who is allegedly Nimona, according to The Director's scroll). In the alleged monster story, the monster destroys and kills everything in its path, until Gloreth slays it.

Nimona seemingly takes to living as an outsider in the kingdom, but sees the Wanted signs when Ballister is accused of murdering Queen Valerin. She goes to see him at his hideout, and applies to be his sidekick. When Ballister is imprisoned, she breaks into the Institute to free him, frightening him with her ability to shapeshift, and their flight causes massive damage to the building.

While Ballister is unconscious, Nimona redecorates his lair, making it more dangerous and fashionable. Ballister agrees to let her help him clear his name, starting with talking with Diego the Squire to see what he knows about the frame job. Nimona demonstrates her ability to shapeshift into humans along the way. When Ballister asks about her backstory, she explains she made a wish in a wishing well, but plays it off as a joke. The pair escape Ambrosius Goldenloin and the knights, and run into Diego at a marketplace. Nimona shapeshifts into the demon baby to kidnap or lure Diego away, but Ballister hits Diego with a car, knocking him unconscious. They drive off. In an alley, Ballister discovers that Nimona has been shot with an arrow, and panics, but does his best to remove the arrow and bandage her injury, and his concern and attempts to learn how to be more accepting touches Nimona. They question and threaten Diego, getting him to reveal the recording he took of the Director replacing Ballister's sword with a sword with a laser inside. Nimona insists they share the footage to topple the government, but Ballister demands caution, and that they just show it to Ambrosius.

Nimona and Ballister confront Ambrosius and the Director, but when Ballister offers to show Ambrosius the footage, Sir Thoddeus Sureblade destroys the phone. Furious and hurt by Ambrosius' lack of support, Ballister suggests he and Nimona fight, and they take out most of the knights, until Todd grabs Ballister in a moment of distraction. Nimona goes to his rescue, but is caught by an electric net, alarming Ballister. Enraged, she turns into a dragon similar in appearance to Kwispy Dwagon to escape, and fires cereal balls at the knights. When Patience is nearly hit by a car, Nimona uses her tail to protect Patience, and then shapeshifts into her girl child form to be less threatening. Patience picks up a sword and turns it on Nimona, shocking her. Ballister grabs Nimona and flees.

Back at the tower, Ballister asks Nimona what's wrong. She grows increasingly enraged at being bothered and offered help. She finally talks about how children are taught to believe they, "can be a hero if they drive a sword into the heart of anything different", and yet Nimona is considered a monster. She also talks about her suicidal ideation. Ballister says they'll go away, somewhere Nimona will be safe. Nimona is touched, but argues that they can't let the Director get away with things, and they prepare a plan.

    Invulnerability

Nimona is somewhat invulnerable to harm, such as when she leans her bare arm on a running table saw without injury and is able to survive being stabbed through the chest. She can be injured and does bleed, and mentions that she feels pain, but it doesn't seem to impact her much.

    Martial Skills

Nimona is quite creative, fast, and physically powerful. She easily outdoes many trained knights, even on her own.

    Partial shapeshifting/power usage

Nimona can alter her human form to exhibit non-human abilities. This includes giving herself wings, a tail, extra fingers, sharp teeth, increasing her size and musculature, and manipulating the positioning of her eyes. She can also breathe fire. In her demon baby form, she can apparently levitate. In her pink dragon/Kwispy Dwagon form, she is able to fire giant pink cereal balls from her mouth.

    Ballister Boldheart

Ballister and Nimona often argue about how to handle different situations, but they are fond of each other. Ballister struggles to understand Nimona against the stories and rules he's been raised on. Nimona is badly hurt when Ballister finally turns on her. But in the end, they care deeply for each other, and support each other.

    Ambrosius Goldenloin

Ambrosius is deeply confused by Nimona, and doesn't trust her. Nimona doesn't like Ambrosius, seemingly at least in part because of how Ambrosius hurt Ballister, and how Ambrosius, when given the chance, didn't choose to support Ballister

    Diego the Squire

Diego is terrified of Nimona. Nimona seems to delight in terrifying Diego.

•In the scene where Nimona is hit by an arrow, Esteban Bravo (story artist) explained, "One of the things the directors wanted to explore in this scene is how Nimona becomes transfixed with Ballister’s concern for her. She doesn’t need anyone to tend to her wounds but she hasn’t been cared for like this in a long time."

•The board game Nimona and Ballister play is called World Domination and is similar to Monopoly.

•Backstory seemingly connecting Nimona and Gloreth more officially, as appears in the movie adaptation, is something Stevenson has thought about for some time prior to the movie's development, and Stevenson noted, “There’s one thing I really loved seeing in the movie, because it was a seed of an idea I had with the comic that didn’t really fit in the comic itself . . . That’s the story of Gloreth, and her backstory with Nimona. . . . [That backstory] was something I thought about for the comic, so I talked to the filmmakers about it . . . To see it unfold in such a beautiful way in the movie was really amazing. I love being able to see different shades of this story, which I know really, really well, being expanded in different directions, and evolving into something new.”

•Chloë Grace Moretz's performance as Hit Girl in Kick-Ass the movie was one of the original inspirations for Nimona the webcomic character. Moretz then went on to be cast as Nimona in the movie adaptation.
