The film is based on the true story of a missing Australian child, Steven Walls (played by Dawes). After his disappearance, a massive search is organised across the Guyra area as its citizens spring into action. The problem in finding Steven is that he was taught not to speak to strangers, and is afraid of those who attempt to speak to him.
Just a few hours before four-year-old Steven Walls was rescued, the search reached its lowest ebb in more than three days when spotters in a light aircraft reported seeing carrion birds circling over a gorge.
