Æthelred I (alt. Aethelred, Ethelred; Old English: Æthel-ræd, lit. 'noble counsel'; [1] 845/848 to 871) was King of Wessex from 865 until his death in 871. He was the fourth of five sons of King Æthelwulf of Wessex, four of whom in turn became king.
Æthelberht, king of the West Saxons (d. 865), was third of five sons of King Æthelwulf and Osburh, herself descended from the West Saxon royal line. Shortly before Æthelwulf went to Rome in 855, Æthelberht was appointed sub-king of Kent (really Kent, Essex, Surrey, and Sussex), a post he kept until 860.

Æthelberht ( Old English: [ˈæðelberˠxt]; also spelled Ethelbert or Aethelberht) was the King of Wessex from 860 until his death in 865. He was the third son of King Æthelwulf by his first wife, Osburh. Æthelberht was first recorded as a witness to a charter in 854.
Æthelbert, d. 865, king of Wessex (860–65), son of Æthelwulf. After the death of his father in 858 he ruled Kent, Surrey, Sussex, and Essex, and he reunited them with Wessex when in 860 he succeeded his brother Æthelbald in that kingdom.
