Under the name of »Mozartsommer«, the last wartime Mozartfest took place in 1944, before theatres in Germany were closed on 1 September 1944 and before the devastating air raid on Würzburg of 16 March 1945. Following a six-year break, the Mozartfest was resumed in 1951 under the aegis and sponsorship of Würzburg City Council.
