Twelve Angry Men: Summary Act 1 Twelve Angry Men takes place in a jury room in the late afternoon on a hot summer's day in New York City. After the curtain rises, the judge's voice is heard offstage, giving instructions to the jury. He says that the defendant is being tried for first-degree murder, which carries a mandatory death penalty.
Papers blow across the table and onto the floor as the door opens. Lettered on the outside of the door are the words "Jury Room". A uniformed guard holds the door open. Slowly, almost self-consciously, the twelve jurors file in. The guard counts them as they enter the door, his lips moving, but no sound coming forth.
