In the summer of 1453, the French army, under the command of experienced military leaders, Marshal Jean Bureau and Jean Poton de Xaintrailles, set its sights on the English-held town of Castillon. The French forces were bolstered by a contingent of loyal Gascon troops, eager to see Aquitaine reunited with France after decades of English occupation.
