In 1949 Porsche completed a new cylinder head for the 356 based off the Strumboot design for the light attack boats. These allowed for 38mm valves over the 38mm VW counterparts and increased power to 40 bhp. With a slight increase in bore, this setup offered the same power, only 200 rpm sooner.1.

1949 Porsche 356/2 Gmund Coupe. This vehicle, chassis number 356/2-040, was built in the spring of 1949, and is the oldest original condition Porsche in the world. It is one of less than 50 hand built all aluminum cars produced in Porsche's first 'factory' - a converted sawmill in Gmund, Austria (hence its name).
