[2] It was the last Van Halen studio album until A Different Kind of Truth (2012) to feature lead singer David Lee Roth, who left the band in 1985 following creative differences.

Though still very much a hard-rock album at heart, 1984 is notable for its pronounced use of Eddie Van Halen’s recently acquired Oberheim synthesisers, with the album’s title track effectively amounting to 67 seconds’ worth of keyboard warm-ups captured on the sly by recording engineer Don Landee.
