Only Advance is the seventh episode of the Netflix streaming series Three Body Problem . It aired on March 21, 2024. It also the penultimate episode for the season.

The rule book on mortality is rewritten as humanity prepares for interplanetary war. Life is not a fairy tale, as Will Downing knows too well. But a part of him still believes in happily ever after. A great technological leap forward changes the meaning of death for a select few, while Auggie tries to take back control of her life and work. Saul Du...

At night, Will is showing Saul DX3906, the star that he bought for 19.5 million as a gift to Jin. Saul goes on to ask how far away the star is, to which Will responds that it is four hundred and 1.5 light- years. Saul mentions that by the time the light this star is emitting gets to Earth, the San-Ti will have arrived on the planet. To which Will asks that his friend not ruin it with that downer of a comment. Later, Will explains that the reason he picked this particular star is because it is visible to the naked eye. He wants Jin to look up at the sky, and say that is hers. However, when Saul jokes that Will could just tell her how he feels, he has Saul swear that he will never tell her the truth. Saul goes inside to grab another beer, when there’s a loud thud outside. He goes back out, and sees Will has seemingly passed out.

At Wychwood Manor, Jin is on the video call asking how Will is doing. Saul tells her Will is good, in fact he is better than good, and jokes that Will is higher than Willie Nelson from all the pain medication in his system. Once it’s just Saul with Jin, his demeanor changes and tells her to come when she can. Afterwards, Jin gets a delivery, which turns out to be a certificate for the star Will bought for her. Raj asks if one of her past suitors got that for her, and Jin said not likely as none had that exuberant amount of money. She further points out that she has not known anyone with that kind of money since Jack Rooney, but calls the whole thing ridiculous, as no one can truly own a star.

Afterwards, Jin is at a meeting where Wade introduces Dr. Demikhov to Jin and the others. Wade mentions how Dr. Demikhov has, for many years, been doing good work keeping things alive under extreme conditions. Jin and her team for this project go on to say that traveling at 1% light speed, it will take the Staircase probe 200 years to reach the San-Ti fleet. But in that time, the human body dies and decomposes. Dr. Demikhov is happy to show everyone present how despite the long struggle, and many setbacks, he has achieved the in-between dead and alive. Inside a capsule is an ape who is neither dead nor above, and has been in that condition for a month now. When Jin asks how long the specimen can stay that way, the doctor replies it can be for as long as we like. Dr. Demikhov then goes on to say how the specimen known as Kolia has had their cells flushed with antifreeze cryoprotectant and cooled to minus 150 degrees. Subsequently slowed down a thousandfold, but not quite stopped. He wakes up Kolya, and tells Jin and the others that if it works for Kolya, it will work for a person. Unfortunately a side effect of the process is being nauseous and unable to initially keep any food down.

Later, Wade makes it known that he plans to go into hibernation as soon as he can. He plans to be woken up for a week every year, fix the fuckups, visit his mum, hire people, fire those people that aren’t working out, go to Wimbledon, and then go back under each year for 400 years. Seen as how he wants to be the one to see the San-Ti’s arrival, as well as keep working on the Staircase project.

Elsewhere, Auggie tells Jin that the Staircase probe needs a sail, and goes on to explain how it’s a nanofiber weave, but not the single strand they have made thus far. As it turns out, it is more complicated because there’s also heat and stress tolerance to be considered, as well as the fibers needing to connect the probe to the sail. Auggie admits to Jin that the reason she initially started to do her nanofiber work was to do something good for her family. But in the process, she ended up on the wrong side. She admits to Jin that there are days when she believes the work they are doing will do some good in the future. But some other days, she feels like the people getting screwed over will always be screwed over.

Meanwhile, Will dreams that he is aboard a paper boat sailing away until he is woken up by his siblings, with whom he has a strained relationship at best. As it turns out, rather than being there for their sibling, they have come to talk to him to make sure that whatever little money their mom left Will, as his next of kin, should go to them.
