The Stars Our Destination is the sixth episode of the Netflix streaming series Three Body Problem . It aired on March 21, 2024.
The world catches its breath, and everyone begins to grapple with a new reality. Jin steels herself for a new mission. Mass panic continues to unfold worldwide, in the wake of the so-called “Eye in the Sky Event”.Thus, millions of people have taken to the streets after the revelation that an alien race known as the San-Ti are headed towards Earth. As a result of the fear that has taken hold of many people around the world, several nations have opted to deploy their militaries on their own people in an attempt to quell the unrest.
Meanwhile, Secretary-General Joseph during a United Nations session goes on to say that “humanity will survive this present crisis, as humans have survived other crises that come before it.
At Headquarters, Detective Shi brings in Jin to see Ye Wenjie, who has not said a word since the San-Ti referred to humans as bugs. Once it is just the two women, Jin tells Ye Wenjie that she is lucky because here, she has no windows or screens. Outside, everyone is terrified; with some people opting to commit suicide. While many of the San-Ti’s followers continue to be just as devoted as before, referring to them as their saviors, and trying to correct folks that call this alien race the aggressor.
When Ye Wenjie finally speaks, she goes on to say that on the stage where her father was killed, all those years ago, there was a poster. She recalls seeing it all over Beijing that year. It was of a man with a hammer smashing the Buddha, Jesus and a rock and roll record. This poster also had a slogan, which said, “Destroy the old world. Forge the new world”. Ever since then, it stuck with her like a mantra that kept her going. However, Jin is quick to point out that her decision all those years ago betrayed everyone who is alive today, and who will be alive from now and until the San-Ti’s arrival four hundred years into the future. Tearfully, Ye Wenjie agrees that the San-Ti are no longer coming to save them because according to her, they learned the truth about humans. Which is that part of human nature is that we lie and deceive. It is precisely this darkness inside humans which they cannot understand. Eventually, Jin confronts Ye Wenjie, asking the older woman who gave her the right to make such a monumental decision for all of humanity. Before she leaves, Jin tells Ye Wenjie that history will remember her as a traitor and not the great physicist that she once was. For her part, Jin hopes to be remembered as someone who fought back.
At Wychwood Manor, Wade mentions how from now on, the fight to save humanity will take place at this location, which is far away from the urban rioting, alien worshippers, and the suicide cults plaguing the city of London. Later, Wade talks with Jin, and asks her to find a way to get a probe to 1% light speed or faster, which utilizes existing technology
At a beach, Saul and Will are talking, and the latter mentions how his pain is not so bad at the moment, but it is in these moments that are the worst, because it allows him time to think about the terror of it all. Will goes onto say that despite still not believing in God, he has taken to imagining himself up there in the sky looking down at his friends. Eventually, Auggie joins them, and she hugs Will tightly before taking a seat next to the two men. Saul asks Auggie if she’s okay, and all she can say is yes. Switching the subject, she jokes that the English really suck at beaches.
