"Fight or Flight" is the thirteenth episode of the second season of 9-1-1, and the twenty-third episode overall. It aired on April 1, 2019.

The First Responders rally together to search for a missing Maddie.

The episode begins with Buck kneeling over Chimney while on the phone with 9-1-1. As he performs first aid, he gives his name to the 9-1-1 operator and finds out he's talking to Josh, Maddie's co-worker. Buck describes Chimney's condition and says that he has only minutes until he dies. Chimney is able to mumble out the name "Jason" and how he took Maddie. As EMS arrives on the scene, Buck runs around Maddie's house and calls out her name but eventually finds her phone. He comes to the conclusion that Doug must've kidnapped Maddie.

A flashback shows Maddie and Doug celebrating and slowly dancing. Maddie accidentally knocks over an expensive wine glass, to which Doug punches her. Jumping back to the present, Doug and a restrained Maddie drive down a highway. Doug yells at Maddie for leaving, and she asks if Chimney is dead. She asks how long he's been watching her, and Doug reveals that he's been stalking her for a while. Meanwhile, at the hospital, the 118 stands in the waiting room as they anxiously await more news on Chimney.

At Maddie's house, Buck tells Bobby, Athena, and an investigator that Doug took his sister. When he becomes frustrated that they are doubting him, he steals Chimney's phone and leaves for the hospital. Once there, Buck manages to use Chimney's thumb to unlock it. Unfortunately for him, Athena catches him in the act, but after talking to her superiors, she is willing to help him find Maddie on the condition that he doesn't get into any trouble.

Back in Doug's car, the fuel light appears, forcing him and Maddie to find a gas station. Before they arrive, Maddie asks him to kill her, which he refuses. At the gas station, Doug fills up the tank but, to his annoyance, gets an Amber Alert on his phone. Meanwhile, Buck and Athena are escorted by Sue through the 9-1-1 operation center, the two introduce themselves to Josh. They show Josh Doug's number from Chimney's phone, which he recognized earlier that day. He makes a manual request to find the location of the phone.

At the gas station, Maddie leaves the car and is caught by Doug. She makes up a lie and says that she needs to use the bathroom. He reluctantly releases her but follows her inside the building. After asking for a key from a suspicious-looking cashier, Maddie tries to escape through the window and manages to climb out. Before Maddie can run, however, Doug catches her and restrains her. At that moment, the cashier appears with a gun. Before he can shoot, Doug attacks the cashier and kills him, to Maddie's horror.

Back at the hospital, the 118 share stories about Chimney to lighten the mood as they wait for him to get out of surgery. Michael, May, and Harry show up and bring treats for everyone. Michael reveals how Harry was worried for Bobby's mental health. Buck drives with Athena as she takes a call from the investigator, who is angry about Buck stealing Chimney's phone. After Athena defuses the situation, Buck shares his doubts about Maddie's survival.
