Notorious womanizer and oil baron Paul Chadwick (Rock Hudson) wins a legal case in Paris by charming the female judge, which infuriates the opposing lawyer, Michel Boullard (Charles Boyer). Boullard then asks Chadwick for a favor in exchange for not exposing his shenanigans. Chadwick is to seduce Boullard's estranged daughter, Lauren (Leslie Caron), a domineering Freudian psychologist, in order to break her engagement to a milquetoast suitor.
