Alan Alexander Milne (/ m ɪ l n /; 18 January 1882 – 31 January 1956) was an English author. He was best known for his books about the teddy bear Winnie-the-Pooh and for many poems. Milne served in both World Wars, joining the British Army in World War I, and was a captain of the British Home Guard in World War II.

Before writing Winnie-the-Pooh, A. A. Milne was already a successful writer. He wrote for English humour magazine Punch, had published a mystery novel, The Red House Mystery (1922), and was a playwright. Milne began writing poetry for children after being asked by fellow Punch contributor, Rose Fyleman.
