Historically this spa-town was a prominent city, the place where the German Kings were crowned, and a famously favoured residence of Charlemagne who still lies buried in the impressive cathedral he himself had built.
Sitting in the border with Belgium and Netherlands, Aachen is the westernmost city of Germany which played a major role historically – being the home of prominent kings as the capital of the Holy Roman Empire throughout the medieval period.
(In French, Aix-la-Chapelle, the name by which the city is generally known; in Latin Aquae Grani, later Aquisgranum). The city of Aachen lies in a Prussian valley, surrounded by wooded heights, on the Wurm, a tributary of the Roer, on its way to the Meuse.
