Ibn Saud was the son of Abdul Rahman bin Faisal, Emir of Nejd, and Sara bint Ahmed Al Sudairi. The family were exiled from their residence in the city of Riyadh in 1890. Ibn Saud reconquered Riyadh in 1902, starting three decades of conquests that made him the ruler of nearly all of central and north Arabia.

Jan 13, 2022 · January 15 marks the 120th anniversary of Abdulaziz’s capture of Saudi Arabia's capital, a heroic feat without which the kingdom may never have existed. Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman Al Saud (C) recaptured the Al Saud's ancestral capital Riyadh in 1902. He went on to expand the realm and became the first king of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932.
After his defeat at Mulayda, Abdul Rahman bin Faisal went with his family into exile in the deserts of eastern Arabia among the Al Murra bedouin. Soon afterward, however, he found refuge in Kuwait as a guest of the Kuwaiti emir, Mubarak Al Sabah. In 1902, Abdul Rahman's son, Abdulaziz, took on the task of restoring Saudi rule in Riyadh.
