What is the difference between academic year and academic term?
An academic term (or simply term) is a portion of an academic year during which an educational institution holds classes. The schedules adopted vary widely. Specific synonyms are commonly used to denote the duration or a term.
- Semesters. Semester schools are often broken into two terms, the fall and spring semesters. It depends on the college, but the semesters are typically 15 weeks long.
- Quarters. A college that uses a quarter system divides time into four terms, three of which are primary and optional. Each term typically goes 10-12 weeks.
- Trimester. Depending on your school, the trimester terms are broken into three modules of 11 to 12-week increments. Like the semester system, the first-trimester period begins in the fall, and the second starts in the spring.
- January Term or May Term. Some colleges and universities may opt to include short-term courses within their more extensive semester calendars. Typically these are called J-Terms or Maymesters because the terms happen during January and May.
- College terms: Semesters vs. quarters. Colleges and universities often arrange their academic calendar around a semester or quarter system. On a semester system, there are two main terms in the academic year, Fall and Spring, each lasting around 15 to 17 weeks, or about four months.
- Fall semester important dates. Start date: Late August through early September. Holidays: Labor Day (September), Indigenous Peoples’ Day (October), Thanksgiving break (November)
- Spring semester important dates. Start date: Mid- to late January. Holidays: Spring break (March or April) Finals week: May. The Spring semester typically begins in mid- to late January and continues through May.
- Flexible college schedule options. Although you have some control when it comes to building your class schedule each semester, in-person colleges may not always have options that best suit your needs.
