Joe Parkson is a disabled war veteran who is out for revenge. The target of his wrath is his former commanding officer, Frank Enley, whom he blames for what happened to him. They flew 25 missions together and were shot down, ending up in a German POW camp. As the senior officer in their hut, Enley tried to dissuade the men from trying to escape.

Synopsis. At a Memorial Day celebration in the small town of Santa Lisa, California, contractor Frank R. Enley, a World War II Veteran, is honored for bringing a new housing project to the town. On the same day, Joe Parkson, a mysterious and disabled war veteran, arrives in Santa Lisa hoping to find Frank and kill him.
A former prisoner of war, Frank Enley (Van Heflin) is hailed as a hero in his California town. However, Frank actually aided his Nazi captors, and he closely guards this secret! Frank's shameful past comes back to visit him when fellow survivor Joe Parkson (Robert Ryan) emerges, intent on making the turncoat pay for his betrayal.
