He is the strategist, tactician and moral center of Mutant X, even though he is not a New Mutant himself. Like all the other members of his team, he is a skilled martial artist. It was his genetic research as a Genomex scientist that created 1000 New Mutants.
When Adam grew disquieted with Genomex's questionable ethics, he leaves Genomex and drops out of sight. He has taken the responsibility to save these innocent victims of Genomex. He helps to form the New Mutant Underground and set up Mutant X, a team of powerful New Mutants who could fight, if necessary, to maintain New Mutant freedoms. However, it took Adam twenty years for his morals to be activated. Even after leaving Genomex, he continues his experimentation on New Mutants as he admits in the third and final season.
It is revealed in the series finale that Adam was born a clone of The Creator, founder of The Dominion and he was raised by Michael and Kara Kane who were The Creator's loyal employees. Adam believed that Michael and Kara were his parents.

Adam is not a New Mutant himself and does not possess any New Mutant abilities. He is a superb strategist and tactician. He is also a skilled martial artist. He is arguably one of the smartest men alive with an unrivaled knowledge of genetic sciences.
•In the original Mutant X casting breakdowns, Adam's last name was Xero, and he was a New Mutant with genetically enhanced intellect. After the Fox vs. Marvel lawsuit which accused Mutant X's creators of copying aspects of the X-Men film, Adam Xero was seen as being too similar to X-Men's Professor Charles Xavier. As a result, Adam lost his surname and New Mutant status, he remained surnameless throughout the first season and later on, he was given the surname "Kane" at the beginning of the second season.
•Adam was named after Mutant X executive producer Adam Haight.
•Adam can play poker and chess simultaneously and successfully. He has a scar on his left chest where Shalimar attacked him at their first meeting.
•Notes on Adam's origins: Actor John Shea revealed in an interview that Adam was a 19 year old Stanford biogenetics prodigy working in agricultural cross-fertilization/animal husbandry when he was recruited by Genomex (then, a branch of the CIA called the American Industrial Complex). Shea has also stated that the source of some of Adam's wealth was "clever investing" in technology stocks in the 1990s while working at Genomex.
