Adolfo Lutz. A Brazilian physician and scientist, Lutz was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1855. With a doctorate from the University of Bern, Switzerland (1880), Lutz began practicing in Limeira, São Paulo. Ten years later, he went to Hawaii as a leprosy specialist, where he became director of the hospital in Kalihi, on Molocai Island.
