Adriaen Courtsen Block (c. 1567 – 27 April 1627) was a Dutch private trader, privateer, and ship's captain who is best known for exploring the coastal and river valley areas between present-day New Jersey and Massachusetts during four voyages from 1611 to 1614, following the 1609 expedition by Henry Hudson. Adriaen Block was a Dutch fur trader who sailed up the Connecticut River in 1614 and named it the Fresh-Water. He also discovered the Quinni-tukq-ut or Quoneh-ta-cut, a long tidal river, and the villages of the Indians living along its banks. He wrote about his impressions of the river, the natives, and the Dutch settlements in New Amsterdam and Hartford.
