Ailsa Mellon Bruce (June 28, 1901 – August 25, 1969) [1] was a prominent American socialite and philanthropist who established the Avalon Foundation. [1] Early life. Ailsa was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on June 28, 1901. She was the daughter of the banker and diplomat Andrew W. Mellon and Nora Mary ( née McMullen) Mellon (1879–1937).

Ailsa Mellon Bruce was a noted philanthropist and patron of the arts. In 1940, she established the Avalon Foundation, which made grants to cultural institutions, colleges and universities, hospitals, youth and community service organizations, churches, and conservation projects.
She had a full social life, and almost became engaged to Prince Otto von Bismarck, grandson of the Iron Chancellor. Instead in 1926 she married David K. E. Bruce [1898-1977]. As a wedding gift, Andrew Mellon purchased for his daughter the "Woodlands" estate at Woodbury, Long Island, since been purchased by the town of Oyster Bay.
