Alan Rickman was an English actor of the stage and screen. Rickman gained international acclaim for his role as Hans Gruber in the action film Die Hard (1988) and Severus Snape in the Harry Potter film series (2001–2011).
Rickman's stage performances in the 1990s include Antony and Cleopatra in 1998 as Mark Antony, with Helen Mirren as Cleopatra, in the Royal National Theatre's production at the Olivier Theatre in London, which ran from October to December 1998.
Denied the role in the film version of the show, Rickman instead made his first film appearance opposite Bruce Willis in Die Hard (1988) as the villainous Hans Gruber. His take on the urbane villain set the standard for screen villains for decades to come.
