Alexander was born as son of the King Casimir IV Jagiellon of Poland and Elisabeth Habsburg of Hungary, daughter of the King Albert of Hungary.
Alexander Jagiellon never felt at home in Poland, and bestowed his favor principally upon his fellow Lithuanians, the most notable of whom was the wealthy Lithuanian magnate Michael Glinski, who justified his master's confidence by his great victory over the Tatars at Kleck (5 August 1506), news of which was brought to Alexander on his deathbed in Vilnius.

Alexander's shortage of funds immediately made him subservient to the Polish Senate and nobility (), who deprived him of control of the mint (then one of the most lucrative sources of revenue for the Polish kings), curtailed his prerogatives, and generally endeavored to reduce him to a subordinate position.
He was born into the royal line of Jagiellon as the fourth son of Casimir IV Jagiellon, the Great Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland. Upon the death of Casimir IV in 1492, he was Crowned the Grand Duke of Lithuania; upon the death of his older brother, John I Albert in 1501, he was crowned the King of Poland and Holy Polish Emperor.

Jagiellon dynasty, family of monarchs of Poland-Lithuania, Bohemia, and Hungary that became one of the most powerful in east central Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. The dynasty was founded by Jogaila , the grand duke of Lithuania , who married Queen Jadwiga of Poland in 1386, converted to Christianity , and became King Władysław II Jagiełło of Poland.
Casimir Jagiellon was the third and youngest son of King Władysław II Jagiełło and his fourth wife, Sophia of Halshany. His father was already 65 at the time of Casimir’s birth, and his brother Władysław III, three years his senior, was expected to become king before his majority.
