He changed his stage name to Alexander Siddig in 1995, after years of correcting people on pronunciation. Around here, we call him ‘Sid’ or ‘Siddig’. The Sudan of the late ’60s was, as it is now, a place of political turmoil. Sid’s uncle, Sadiq Al Mahdi, was ruling the Sudan in 1965, but was soon deposed.
