Strikingly beautiful Italian actress who began her career in the mid-1930s at the age of 15. Valli starred in mostly uninspired works until her temporary retirement in 1944, due to her refusal to appear in Fascist propaganda films (in 1945 her mother was shot as a collaborator).
Alida Valli. Italian born Valli brought a coolly exotic quality to films such as Hitchcock's The Paradine Case (1949), and playing Harry Lime's disillusioned lover in The Third Man (1949). Other movies, amongst the 100 or so she made, include Les Yeux sans visage (1959), Novacento (1976) and The Cassandra Crossing (1977).
