Feb 13, 2022 · The Town of Amarante. Situated 56 km east of Porto, the pretty town of Amarante is set immaculately along the banks of the River Tâmega. One of the most ancient settlements in northern Portugal, it was founded as Turdetanos in 360 BC and went on to prosper under the Romans.
A view of the landscape of the town of Amarante in 1900. Amarante is situated in the agricultural lands of the Minho region, and belongs to the Porto district, region Norte and sub-region Támega. The Tâmega River runs through the town and is crossed by a large arched bridge, the Ponte São Gonçalo.

- Museu Municipal Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso. This museum for modern and contemporary art is in the church’s renovated convent buildings around a solemn Mannerist cloister.
- Parque Florestal de Amarante. On the left bank of the Tâmega, a short way downriver from the centre is a serene park landscaped in 1916. This five-hectare space was planted with hundreds of exotic trees like ginkgos.
