Academy members are world leaders in the arts and sciences, business, philanthropy, and public affairs. They are based across the United States and around the world. These elected members join with other experts to explore challenges facing society, identify solutions, and promote nonpartisan recommendations that advance the public good.
The American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAA&S) is one of the oldest learned societies in the United States. It was founded in 1780 during the American Revolution by John Adams , John Hancock , James Bowdoin , [1] Andrew Oliver , and other Founding Fathers of the United States . [2]

The newest members are being recognized and celebrated for their excellence, and invited to join the Academy in connecting across disciplines and divides to advance the common good.
Programs. Academy projects are grouped into five areas of study, each guided by a Program Advisory Group. A sixth advisory group provides guidance regarding Artificial Intelligence across all program areas. The Academy does undertake work that does not fit into a single category, including exploratory meetings.
