Historic downtown Amherst. Amherst is a city of 9,400 people (2016) in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. Amherst is the county seat and largest population centre in the Cumberland region.
Amherst grew to become an important shipbuilding centre in the 19th Century, and was home to four of Canada's Fathers of Confederation. Its location at the narrow isthmus connecting Nova Scotia to the rest of Canada ensured that it would maintain its status as a major rail and transport hub into the 20th century.
