    Ms. Kane studied at the University of München, and holds degrees from Bryn Mawr College and the John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. She received an Honorary Doctorate from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California. She was awarded the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal of Honour, awarded by Foreign Minister Steinmeier, November 2016. Austria bestowed on her Das Grosse Goldene Ehrenzeichen mit dem Stern, awarded by President Fischer, May 2016 (Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold with Star for Services to the Republic of Austria). From Germany Ms. Kane received Das Grosse Verdienstkreuz des Verdienstordens der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, awarded by President Gauck, June 2015 (Order of Merit of Germany, second-highest level).
