May 3, 2018 · Abstract. The US–Japan Commercial Treaty of 1858 (also known as the Treaty of Amity and Commerce) established commercial relations between the United States and Japan. It opened four new Japanese ports, restricted interior travel by foreigners, banned the opium trade, set tariff rates, and extended the system of extraterritoriality.
