The first public libraries appeared in Arad as early as 1850 - one at the Hotel Crucea Albă (Feher Kereszt) - today Ardealul with a book collection of 30,000 volumes and another on Deak Ferenc Street (today Mihai Eminescu) with a book collection of 90,000 volumes.
