Franz Ferdinand was born on December 18th, 1863 in Graz, Austria. His uncle, Franz Joseph, was the Emperor of Austria and ruled over the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Franz Ferdinand’s father was Archduke Karl Ludwig and was the younger brother of Franz Joseph. In 1889, Franz Joseph’s only son, Rudolf, committed suicide.
On 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated at Sarajevo. This set off a chain of events that led to war. Germany’s emperor, Kaiser Wilhelm II, was at the Kiel Regatta when the assassination took place. Neville Harvey didn’t immediately realise it would mean war.
