The geography of Argentina is heavily diverse, consisting of the Andes Mountains, pampas, and various rivers and lakes. Modern Argentine culture has been influenced largely by the Spanish colonial period and the 19th/20th century European immigration (mainly Italian and Spanish ), and also by Amerindian culture, particularly in the fields of music and art.
Argentina was settled by many different tribes of people. The first major empire arrived when the Incan Empire invaded in 1480. Some of present day Argentina became part of the Incan Empire and some resisted. In 1516, the Spanish arrived in the person of explorer and navigator Juan Diaz de Solias .
