Michael Bolotin was born in New Haven, Connecticut, to George Bolotin, a local Democratic Party official, and his wife Helen, a homemaker.

Michael Bolton achieved breakthrough success with his 1987 cover of Otis Redding's " (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay," which hit No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Bolton scored his first chart-topping album with 1991's Time, Love & Tenderness, which included his No. 1 cover of Percy Sledge's "When A Man Loves A Woman."
