Ary Scheffer (10 February 1795 – 15 June 1858) was a Dutch-French Romantic painter. He was known mostly for his works based on literature, with paintings based on the works of Dante, Goethe, Lord Byron and Walter Scott, as well as religious subjects. He was also a prolific painter of portraits of famous and influential people in his lifetime.

Leading the Revival of Realism. SCHEFFER, ARY (1795—1858), French painter of Dutch extraction, was born at Dort on the 10th of February 1795. After the early death of his father, a poor painter, Ary was taken to Paris and placed in the studio of Guérin by his mother, a woman of great energy and character.

1795 - 1858. Ary Scheffer was born in Dordrecht and taught by his father, J. B. Scheffer. He was in Paris in 1811, where he studied under Guérin. He exhibited at the Salon from 1812. He was an illustrator, painter and engraver. He was popular in France for his portraits and history paintings.
